"Be bloody, bold and resolute; laugh to scorn the power of man, for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth" -Macbeth, Act 4-Scene 1 (sec. app), Dover Thrift Editoin of Macbeth.
In my British Literature cl, my teacher insisted that the page meant that "none of woman born" refers to those not raised by a mother and those who had their mothers die during birth. She explained that during that time period, a woman having trouble giving birth would often have to be sacrificed to save the child, and that the child would have to be fed by a nanny, or die if no nannys were available.
However, I was always made to believe that the page meant that those who were not naturally born, as in through c-section (torn from their mothers womb), were the ones with the special ability to harm Macbeth. Which is it?
