Hi. I just found this forum. Very nice!
I was wondering if you folks could help me out. I run a small theatre company in NYC, and we're trying to choose a new name. We're currently called The Stomping Ground Theatre Company (www.stomping-ground.com), but that name doesn't really tell you anything about us.
We're about to incorporate and become a not-for-profit, so we need a name that explains what we're about (hopefully a name that will make people feel good as they write it on checks while making donations).
Let me explain a bit about our company. We product only classic plays. We're mostly concerned with story, which we define as plot & character. We want audiences to say, "I couldn't wait to see what would happen next" (plot) or "that Hamlet guy reminded me so much of my brother" (character). We're not about theme, social/political commentary or directorial experimentation (i.e. Macbeth set on Mars).
We generally perform complete texts (uncut). We don't use trational theatre trappings -- we don't use sets, costumes, etc. The actors wear whatever they are wearing that day. We play on bare stages (sometimes with a few chairs and tables). We use as few props as we can get away with. We don't do this to be radical or minimalist or modernized. We just want to isolate the words and the actors, to see how much we can evoke with just these elements (if you've ever seen "Vanya on 42nd Street," you get an idea of what our productions are like.)
So we'd like a name that is somewhat conservative (simply descriptive: i.e. The Classics Company) and implies simple staging, storytelling, classics, our region (new york), lack of overt directorial reinterpretation, and fidelity to text. Obviously, we can't fit all of these concepts into one name. One or two would be fine.
Below, I've listed what we've come up with so far. I'd love opinions of these names (some of which are really bad, but we're not censoring at the moment -- just brainstorming). And if you can think of any other names that would meet our purpose, please feel free to mention them.
Note that we don't only perform Shakespeare, but many of the names below include his name. That's okay. The RSC does many non-Shakespeare plays too, and I can't remember the last time the Cocteau Rep did a Cocteau Play.
Thanks for your help!
