: Marx viewed religion as a tool of control. It is used to give meaning to the suffering of the oppressed, in order that they accept their lot. It does not represent the collective conscience. Indeed conscience itself is no more than a product of a given society, and is changeable according to cirstances. Most religions depend on the metaphysical nature of conscience.
