We have three main points here... two questions need to be asked...
1. Are these really the essential points in Hume's article?
2. How do we qualify the third point?
The Argument from Evil
David Hume
1st point: Because of imbecility and misery, we tend to depend on God, on the being
Supports:
· Main support of 1st point: since everyone lives in misery, everyone depends on God (Deity)
o A sense of religion emerges because of the just representations of misery and wickedness of man
o Human’s experiences are better/more than enough compared to reasoning an argument
o Negative phenomena (evil) is so widespread that everyone pes through it
§ There is already anguish for the new-born infant and his life will also end up in agony and horror
o Negative things are very proverbial in all languages
o Every animal is surrounded by enemies which seek his misery and destruction
§ Ex: insects that prey on human… but there are also smaller things that prey the insects and make life miserable for them
§ But man is an exception to this rule
§ Man can be the master over all the animals, but he is haunted by imaginary enemies – demons of fancy
o Man is the greatest enemy of man
§ Oppression, injustice, violence, sedition, war, treachery, fraud
o The problem of anxiety, misery is from within ourselves, our minds
§ The disorders of the mind, though more secret, are not perhaps less dismal and vexatious
§ Good example: poor are abundant and they greatly suffer and miserable in their lives. But the rich, though they have everything, never get to be satisfied. They keep wanting for more.
o Man always complain about the miseries of life
o so if in misery, why not die?... because also afraid of death
o even the most prosperous complain of misery
§ ex: Charles V
· all prosperities have been mixed with adversities that there was never satisfaction and contentment
2nd point: God wills everything. Man is not happy. Therefore, God wills him to be unhappy
o there is a strange mixture of phenomena, of good and evil
o you can’t tell which is more, evil or goodness?
o A small amount of misery can last for months or even years and even presents more agony and as time flies by
o What’s the solution?
o Take out the cause of misery
o But the cause itself (evil) is indeed more terrifying
o According to Philo (Hume), one cannot compare pleasure and pain. This would just add confusion and uncertainty of religion…
§ Religion springs fort only when there is no evil and allow happiness of human life
o The heaviness of happiness and misery in the word can not be proven because these subjects (or this subject) exceeds all of human capacity
3rd point: Philo (Hume): evil, misery, and pain, is part of the infinite power and goodness in the Deity (God)
