In Hegels idealist conception of history freedom plays the role of driving force behind the whole process, the ultimate goal of world history:
1.In the ancient oriental empires, he reasoned, only one was free: the oriental king and despot
2.In the mediterranean slave owning societies of antiquity, only a few were free.
3.In the contemporary estate society, he concluded, that went through the experiences of the french revolution and reached a balance in the prussian monarchy (in his opinion) all were free.
Karl Marx refined this idealist conception of history in a materialist one, by uttering the idea that the technological development of society was the driving force behind history, technological progress being the movement through which mankind advanced in gaining autonomy from the blind forces of nature.
