At one point in my study of Sir Francis Bacon, I recall coming across a reference to patents being granted to support members of the court. the Catholic Church applied to have a patent on the english alphabet so that they would have to be paid a tax for printers to use it.
Does anyone out there have any recall of this in their reading?
Thanks!
