: BEWARE of tricky photo contests.
: Recent advertising by Anheuser Busch requesting participation to their blue Waters Photo Contest, states that "all photographs submitted will become property of Anheuser Busch, Inc. and will not be returned.
: They also ask for original slides or negatives, meaning this that they will have the prime stuff to produce whatever advertising they want.
: By submitting, you agree that "the photographs become their property" so they will be able to use them in whatever way they want without paying you or recognizing your copyright, enven if your picture is not selected as a "winner".
: As Anheuser Busch is doing now, there are many other commercial companies sponsoring such photo contests. They ask for original slides or negatives and play by similar rules.
: That is a cheap way to build up a photo catalogue. Such practices are usually promoted by Ad agencies or in-house marketing departments.
: True and honest photo contests are easily recongnizable:
: 1- They ask for prints or copied slides and clearly state: "Do not send originals".
: 2- They offer you the possibilty to get your pictures back by sending a SASE.
: 3- They clearly state the prizes and intended use for the winning photographs.
: 4- They will always recongnize your copyright and will also pay you extra if further use of the photograph is planned which was not stated originally for the contest.
: 5- Prices offered are usually in the equal or greater amount (in chash or merchandize) of what a regular proffessional photographer will charge for similar pictures. (Not the cheap $1500 offered by Anheuser Busch!)
: Stay away from this or any other similar photo contest. Please p this message along all your photo friends and mailing lists you are participating or know about.
