I've written and published a historical novel called "Mitchell's Peak." Read more about it at www.CalebsPress.com. It's based on the life of Elisha Mitchell, the early UNC professor who proved in 1835 that the Black Mountain in NC was the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Twenty years later, in 1857, Mitchell returned to the mountain and disappeared. Why was he crossing the peak alone, and what can you and I learn from the events that engulfed him? Come and see what I learned from Mitchell and the mountains!
The setting crosses the country from the wilderness of Carolina to the early days of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to the rapidly advancing changes of 1840's New York City. Supporting characters include Mitchell's nemesis and former star-pupil, Congressman Thomas Clingman, famous bear-hunter and tracker Big Tom Wilson, Mitchell's beautiful and intelligent wife, Maria, and his troubled son, Charley.
Mitchell's Peak overflows with colorful details of life in the early 1800's: the songs, the experience of travel, the culture of the mountain people, the stories people told to entertain. It is a captivating and suspenseful story full of entertaining people and events. Visit www.CalebsPress.com to learn more and purchase. Robert Dellinger
