This question has been lurking in human minds for centuries. The truth is, that question cannot be answered. Every so called piece of proof for god's existance has been proven a fallacy by many philosophers. One can provide a great argument for a good god, and one can provide an equally great argument for an evil god (read descartes). Marx and Frued provided a great hypothesis for god. Frued said that man created god because of his innate and unconcious fear of death and the unknown. The idea of god satisfies these innate desires, and allows man to avoid his fears.
Consider this: there may be a god, but it is hard to say what religion provides an accurate representation of god. Almost every religion has conflicting representations of god, and that makes it nearly impossible to trust one religion alone. I have a suspension of judgement about god. I believe that if there is a god, man couldn't possibly fathom his true existance. The ultimate reality of god cannot be determined by mere simple minded mortals.
Going back to the idea of god. Do you think its as easy as us dying and going to heaven depending on our supposed moral choices in life? All religions also have conflicting views of morality, so it's hard to determine what is truly moral, thus you could say morality is relative.
Marx claimed that god was in fact created by man in order to govern the everyday citizen. The everday citizen who believes in god allows himself to be governed and controlled by the rich and powerful because their happiness in this world is meaningless. The believers in god think that is they at least live a moral life (which usually goes againsnt human instinct and may cause despair) than they will achieve an afterlife in eternal bliss. The rich and powerful who exploit them use the concept of god to govern the "lesser" individuals.
In my opinion I don't think the concept is as simple many religions make it to be. Living in eternal bliss sounds great and all, and that is an easy way to supress fear of death. I'm not trying to dissolve your belief in god, but I would say you should at least keep an open mind. The "real" world we live in today is extremely complex, and people make a happy of miserable life for themselves depending on the choices they make (unless you believe in fatalism). As humans I believe we are still swimming in ignorance, and we still have so much to discover about life. Humans have only been around for 2 million years. The world has been around for 4.5 billion years. Within the last couple of centuries we are just touching knowledge. What makes you think that humans who are still unsure of the real world and life know for sure about what happens to an individual after death?
Sure you can say that christianity claimed that the bible is the word of god and the word of god tells the truth. But what of other religions that do not say the the bible is the word of god? Just because christianity is a well favored religion in the world doesn't make it correct over the other religions.
