Hello. I have finally decided to read one of the books I have been wanting to read for ages, that is, The Lord of the Rings.

However, when I checked online Tolkien's Bibliography, I discovered there where some other books about Middle Earth (i.e. releated to The Lord of the Rings), mostly being The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and a set of 7 books edited by his son (I think), entitled something like "The History of The Lord of the Rings".

Hence, I need a bit of help to be able to figure out what to read and where to start, but for saving a bit of effort to the people who decide to help me (if any), I'll post definite questions in order for you to know what I want.

Well, there I go:

1) As far as I know, The Silmarillion and the Hobbit are the books which are more related to The Lord of the Rings. According to what I have deduced, although I'm not sure, I think that The Hobbit is much more a complementary book to The Lord of the Rings than the Silmarillion is, even though the Silmarillion serves the purpose of firmly setting many of the concepts seen in The Lord of The Rings. Am I halfway right in all this, supponsing you where able to decypher my messed up sentence? Any further commentaries on this are welcomed, of course.

2) What about those 7 or so books entitled "The History of The Lord of the Rings"? How are them related to The Lord of the Rings, and more importantly, how essential is the role they play in relation to The Lord of The Rings?

3) Are there more books related to The Lord of the Rings? If so, please tell me which ones and the relation they have to them (anyway I mean Tolkien books, of course)

4) Being this question the most simple of all, it is the most important for me, so please, even if you don't have the time to reply to the previous three ones, I'd appreciate a reply to this: Despite all the books related to The Lord of The Rings, can The Lord of The Rings (the full trilogy I mean, of course) be considered as a stand alone book, or would I have the need of reading more ones? Thanks.

Well, that's all about it. Every help will be highly appreciated.
