I am a Historical Interpreter at Washington's Headquarters, State HIstoric Site in New York. My research of the time-period of the War for American Independence has led me to find that shortly before the Revolution, bi-cornered hats were mostly worn by gentlemen. Tri-cornered hats were the prevalant style among militiamen and military men, because the formation of the third corner reduced the hat's width. The two corners of the hat would stick out wide to the right and left. When you fired a long, heavy flintlock, those corners would be in your way in a firing drill/actual battle. They caught on fashion-wise during the time of the Revolution.
