: i am curious about the notion of temptation and in particular, the kinds of objects that particular religions have selected to seduce. thus, why an apple in the garden as opposed to a potato or cabbage? does anyone know of any literature from other religions where different objects of temptatoin have been offerred by the deities?
Actually it was not an apple. Apples have seeds and the fruit from the "tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil" could not have had any seeds. According to Genesis 1:29, Adam and Eve were allowed to eat from any tree that had fruit with seeds in the fruit; then in Genesis 2:16-17 they are specifically told which tree to not eat from. In other words there was only one tree they were forbidden to eat from, and it could not have had seeds in the fruit.
