I have a very interesting hand-written autobiograpy by H.B. Hastings, my grandfather. In 1773-1776, he described his trip from Boston, M. to Liverpool on Cunard Line SS China. The cost of page for the 2 of them was $40. Of course they went "steerage."
They ended up in London, and participated with D.L. Moody in certain Christian activities. Horatius Bonar Hastings (my grandfather) was introduced to Dr. Horatius Bonar. Dr. Bonar "smilingly said, 'I hope you haven't taken my name in vain.'"
My grandfather in his adult years had careers as a teacher, publisher, preacher, and writer.
His father, Horatio Lorenzo Hastings, wrote the lyrics to "Shall We Meet Beyond the River."
