The short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson says a lot about people and society. It’s not natural to be contained inside social norms. One has true animal instincts and needs a cathartic outlet whether it is sports or the lottery, seeing this violence portrayed helps to suppress ones deep seeded thoughts. In this way the lottery becomes an inhibitor of natural instincts.
