Anyone interested in the history of surrealism might like to take a look at www.surrealist-holiday.com, an innovative website just launched to support a forthcoming exhibition at Falmouth Art Gallery in Cornwall, UK.
The Surrealists on Holiday, which runs from 19 June to 4 September, sheds fresh light on a little-known episode in the history of this most influential of all modern art movements. In 1937, an extraordinary group of friends gathered for an extended house party in Cornwall at the invitation of the British painter Roland Penrose. Among them were some of the most original artists, writers and photographers of the 20th century, including Max Ernst, Paul Eluard, Man Ray and Henry Moore.
Previously unseen photographs of this holiday by Penrose himself and his wife-to-be, the legendary photographer and surrealist muse Lee Miller, form the centrepiece of the exhibition. These are accompanied with work by the artists pictured, from the collection of Antony Penrose.
As well as extensive info on the exhibition and its background, the website also has opportunities to enter surreal writing and photography competitions, which will be judged by specially programmed robots featuring the very latest in surrealism detection technology.
