Cubism was a movement in painting that sought to break down objects into the basic shapes of cubes, spheres, cylinders, and cones. Cubism developed in France in early 1900’s. Its emphasis on the relationships of pure shapes and lines had a great influence on all later art. Pablo Pico and Georges Braque led the Cubist movement. The Cubists were influenced by the strength and simplicity of African Negro sculpture and by the structural landscapes of Paul Cezanne. They became increasingly concerned with the problem of how to represent from in space. They developed a semi geometric method of yzing objects into basic shapes. They would begin with a familiar object, such as a table or a guitar. Step by step, they would break if down, flatten it out, change its shapes and colour, and then reemble it into planes. The result was a new construction with only a trace of the original subject. The Cubists also introduced the dimension of time into painting by presenting various views of the object at the same time. Their experiments in this area were related to similar ones in the sciences. Pico’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, painted in 1907, is considered the first Cubist painting. In addition to Pico and Braque, important Cubist painters include Juan Gris and Fernand Leger.
