I actually don't know anything about the particular background of this poem but I just see it as a poem about disappointed love: I'd say it's about being left, betrayed or led on by the beloved person and therefore to understand one has to get on with life without that person but yet to know it won't be possible to forget and neither to replace that person by someone else in one's mind.
