: Can anybody explain the significance of the Shpynx in the second coming to me and how it ties in with the re-birth of Christ and Yeats 2000 year Gyre? I have to do an oral commentary on it tomorrow!! So, your help would be greatly appreciated
Sorry, just signed in so no help in your presentation. Sphinx, ancient religion, not rebirth of christ, but new post-christian era. the rough beast see Nietzche and the lion killing the dragon of "thou shalt". The awakening of the sphinx long sleeping is a reference to the ancient awakening of lost beliefs. Yeats is big on idealizing nature and the past. making them better than they ever were, taking us back to the ideal supernature if you will.
Basically telling the Christian era that the party's over.
