: I have my Grandfathers dogtag and it lists his name (Leonard B. Sugrue) type T-42 and the company he worked for - Johnson, Drake & Piper NY-USA
: the Asmara Eritrea.
: I know that is where he served but he was a civilian. Can anyone tell me how I can start to track down info on where he was and why?
: Thanks very much

Try to locate MIDDLE EAST WAR PROJECTS of JOHNSON, DRAKE & PIPER, INC. FOR THE CORPS OF ENGINERS, U. S. ARMY 1942-1943. Inside, there is a laid-in pamphlet included that contains "A Complete List of the Personnel Engaged in the Middle East War Projects For The Corps of Engineers U. S. Army."
I found my 60-year-old copy on the Internet for under $30 plus shipping. It came today. There are a number of copies available from $30-$90, depending on condition. If ordering, be sure that the pamphlet is included.
In the above pamphlet there is a Leonard B. Sugrue listed. I found my own father's name also.
You might also find a copy of "PAN AFRICA: Across the Sahara in 1941 with Pan Am" by Tom Culbert & Andy Dawson (first published in 1997). My copy came via another Internet bookstore. My dad worked for both JD&P and PAA Africa.
