I have not seen "saving Private Ryan" but I do intend to in the near future. However, the hype and trailers about it did disturb me: it's like war is all a big game and even a war movie as "real" as spielburg's movie is reported to be is all a big joke. You go in, see the movie, cry, laugh, and then walk out and go home and forget. World War II was the most tragic war in the history of the world, and a movie like "saving private ryan" would have, ten or twenty years ago, have had a big impact on the movie-going crowd. But now when all the movies coming out are even gorier than real war people grow numb and forget what death is really like and what war is really about...
people nowadays don't go for movies like this. The tragedy of war doesn't move them: they'd rather go for movies like "titanic" with big sets, big effects, "hot" actors and lots of scenes.
