I'll second Bob's note. It's great to have new people getting into the sport. Don't ever feel like you're getting in the way (unless you are ; - ) We were all once there. As Bob said, the learning curve is steep, keep trying until one when it just 'clicks' and you're having the time of your life, then you're hooked.
Be sure to post your questions as often as you like, this chat board is a great way to stay involved and get help. Don't think your questions are silly or too basic, it helps us all to think through what we're doing and try to explain it to someone else.
Hope to see you on the water!
: I took a lesson on Saturday from Dave Marshall over at Lake Wheeler. I have a couple questions. The first is, how high should the boom be? Is it personal preference or is there a rule of thumb. the gear I was using had the boom set up about even with my head. That seemed high to me. I'd have thought it should be about shoulder level. The second is on etiquette and attitude. Please do not take offense, but if you see someone who is a beginner falling off the board a lot and just generally looking silly, is the prevailng attitude that he needs to get off the water? (this umes that the person in question is not being an and ruuning into other surfers, clogging lanes, etc). I ask because I have tried other sports where beginners aren't tolerated very well for some reason. On the flip side, for beginners are there any dos/don'ts? the next time I am out, I want to keep from annoying everybody. Lastly, do you guys use a PFD or just a harness attached to the board. On Saturday, we didn't have either one, but we also weren't that far from the beach.
