trhe poem has a autobiographical origin. Conrad Aiken, Eliot's friend at HArvard identified the lady as a Boston society Hostess, Adelaine Moffat. the titile also alludes to Henrey James novel, The portrait of a lady.the page of time in the poem is carefully marked-December, April, August, October.the poem reveals the cruelty and violence that lie beneath the restraints of polite drawing room society.
the epigraph to the poem is split between to persons both accuser and the accused are deceitful and morally callous(taken from Marlowe)
the Jew of Malta( the jew and the Frair are conversing)
ELiot is also making use of Dedoublement or division in his personality between the polite social self and his subterranean, buried life from which he is alienated.
the poem is also a critigue of the city like Profrock
