My father just sent me an email about Tortilla Flat. (I thought it might ease you to know that there is someone out there who shares your love for Steinbeck) it reads:

I am re-reading Tortilla Flat. For my part, I do not understand why Steinbeck is not considered the greatest American author. Perhaps it has
something to do with the fact that he speaks so simply and directly to the nature of humanity. I can imagine that sophisticated types would sneer at his resoundingly successful efforts to portray what is worthy in us, what is noble. Where did we lose the idea that common human dignity is the highest form of nobility? Where did we buy into the idea that dirty laundry is more evocative of the human condition than simple gestures of sympathy and understanding between humans?
