This is the third poem in the sonnet trilogy titled, "The Age of Innocence." The first poem is "Prelude to a Kiss." The second poem is “Envy.”
THE AGE OF INNOCENCE LIVES ON
The World Trade Center is a living symbol of man’s dedication to world peace.
-- Minoru Yamasaki, Architect
I Want to Hold Your Hand. -- The Beatles
The building has been struck a mortal .
The tangled wreckage blocks escape. She screams.
The fatal fire consumes the floors below
And chaos reigns among the twisted beams.
The window, warped by heat, has just popped out.
We hold each other trembling. The past,
The future full of scurrying about
In useless work--quality time at last.
We stare into each other’s eyes. A cone
Of perfect silence covers us. We know
The open window waits. We’re all alone.
Our bodies will hit the pavement far below.
A kiss to last though all eternity--
We’re holding hands. Our souls will soon be free.
