It took me a while to decide what kind of resource I needed to finish Doktor Faustus with a more complete comprehension of the universe being presented in that book. It turned out to be a more complete set of Durer prints and paintings, and I had some success finding a couple of good Durer books; and even so, it's still a little short of the diseased Durer that I wanted to see because of the paralle with Leverkuhn's disease and artistry. Still, some success is better than none.
I also tried to find a good set of Montaigne's essays and finally bought the Selected Essays, ed. M. A. Screech, publ. Viking/Penguin. In reading the introduction, I'm becoming most impressed with Montaigne, who was very human and real, yet quite well educated and upper cl. Sort of an anomaly. Not knowing very much yet, my main question is: was Montaigne a Christian humanist, in the vein of Erasmus; or was he a Renaissance clicist, in that he was well versed in the clics as they read in Latin? Do his essays reflect this, or is he a 'one of'? I see also that he lived and wrote at exactly the right time to be a major influence on W.S. I'm wondering if Shakespeare read Montaigne in French or in translation?
