: : : why did boys play the roles of females in shakespeares plays? if u find ne sites talkin bout feminism in othello please let me know asap
: : : thanks
: : Boys played female characters in Shakespeare's productions becuase women were not permitted to act in theatres. Boys could easily play female roles becuase their voices were of higher pitch and often their physique had not fully developed into a man. Hence, their bodies were often softer, slender, more feminine looking. Hope this helps you out! You can go to any library and check out books on 16th century England and find about the history and culture of Shakespeare's times. Women were very opressed back then and not permitted to do much of anything besides being a house wife and mother.
