That is an excellent observation. I think you are exactly right. I first read this story myself in a 10th grade high school english course. Unfortunatly upon discussion the majority of my cl became convinced that Seymore was a pediphile, and the atmosphere quickly dissolved into the teacher and myself vs. the rest of the cl. I wonder now how you percieve the importance of the Bananafish story to be? At the time I believed that Seymore felt he himself was a bananafish. The story was about how he himself had become so engorged with the knowledge he craved, and was so all seeing and emotionally sensitive that he could no longer return to society. He did not "fit" in society, he could not close off his mind and emotions the way most people do inorder to survive daily life, such as in times of great grief or strife. Once he had grief instead of it going away it only collected, he could not rid himself of it as other people do and so he killed himself.
