line. Rush Limbaugh & Re: O'Reilly Punks Out Franken
In February 2001, O'Reilly gave a speech taking credit for winning a coveted Peabody award during his tenure on Inside Edition. After Franken points out the fact that the show never won a Peabody, O'Reilly retorts on the O'Reilly Factor, March 13, 2001, and I quote: "Guy says about me, a couple of weeks ago, 'O'Reilly said he won a Peabody Award.' Never said it. You can't find a transcript where I said it."
Now the truth. O'Reilly had lied about the award on previous occasions. The transcript of his May 19, 2000 broadcast reveals how he repeatedly told a guest who brought up his tabloid past: "We won Peabody Awards . . . We won Peabody Awards . . . A program that wins a Peabody Award, the highest award in journalism, and you're going to denigrate it?"
As the Washington Post reported on March 1, 2001, Inside Edition never won a Peabody Award, only a Polk Award, and not while O'Reilly was there. Notice, too, that O'Reilly didn't just "mispeak" as he claimed on C-Span. Sure, you can confuse Polk and Peabody, but O'Reilly referred to the award as "the highest award in journalism." That's like confusing Phi Beta Kappa with the Key Club.
So, Franken calls him on it once and O'Reilly flatly denies it. Is it a cheap shot -- when someone repeatedly lies about his credentials, then later denies every ever making any such statement -- to point it out and say "Hey, you're a liar?" I don't think so.
Open your mind to the possiblity that everything you hear on Fox isn't true.
: Anybody catch your boy get the living shot stomped out of him today by O'Reilly on C-Span? Franken tried to take some cheap shots but Bill totally stood his ground and made an out of Al despite the liberal crowd of cowards clearly siding with Al. I was hoping Bill would take a swing at Franken. I would have if I was there. Franken said it's time for him and other liberals to start fighting back. Great, his first encounter can be with a United States Marine
