The comparison is often used because both were viewed as citizen soldiers. Cinncinnatus was a patrition who was called upon to save a Roman Army. He organized a group of volunteers who succeeded in conquering the enemy. This parallels what Washington did. Upon victory Cinncinnatus chose to return to his simple life and was awarded land. Washington too wanted to return to his pre-revolutionary war life, but his reward was the Presidency.
