Many did move to England, and many more moved to Canada. It was not as if the average Tory had the financial wherewithal after the fighting had ceased to fund a move to any distant venue. The Loyalists had their property deprived of them (Odd that the Patriots go to war to protect property rights and yet so gleefully violate the property rights of others); houses were burned and possessions stolen. The Tories themselves were often beaten, or worse killed. Many simply swallowed their pride, renounced the King and Parliament, then lived out the rest of their days enduring sneers and raised eyebrows from neighbours. A few of the more notorious Tories retreated to the backwoods to lead a life of exile, for appearing in town would have ured them death.
