Not a theologian but a reader of theology of the "lighter" variety.
C.S. Lewis stated, I believe in "The Screwtape Letters", that to watch a person do something is not to make him do it.
Personally, I've considered free will proof of God, it is the ability to state that in spite of cirstances, or even my own selfish desires, "I choose..." It's an underutilized gift to human kind. Too many of us want to go with the flow rather than exercising the power of choice. Even if our physical cirstances limit us to being able to choose only a mind set, the ability to choose remains.
