Aeneas sounds defeated and pathetic at I:131 but thereafter sounds like a good leader. For instance, he gives his men a pep talk (I:276) when they reach land after the bad storm and in his recounting of the battle of Troy to Dido, he seems to do the right things (engaging the enemy, protecting his family). Have I misread the first page? Does he start to waffle after Book 3?
