Poe was a romantic poet. As all romantic poets, he was uncomfortable living in this world, and thus sought to escape ( in his poetry and stories ). But the final escape is always Death itself. And that is why he wrote some stories on this subject ( The mask of Red Death e.g.). but to truly understand his visions, you should read a lot of his work.
