Definitely not, if you side with Robbe that the novel was already largely in a state of comatose from 1849 onwards.
Gommes was not particularly well received or criticized, for many it was a detective story that had been needlessly
complicated. Regicide was far more progressive and was written a couple of years before Gommes though it wasn't
published until 1978. Otherwise Voyeur was the first real break. I suggest you read Projet though as it is far more
subversive than Gommes.
Look at the other arts, painting and music for example, look at how much they have changed in the past 150 years... then
look at the novel and you'll understand a little more about what RObbe was trying to do.
