: I have an essay to write on Plato and his beliefs that no culture can survive withour some type of myth or noble lie justifying it's existence or mission. I don't know where to find the where Plato talked about this. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.
: In case there is any confusion the exact essay question is:
: Do you agree with Plato that no culture can survive without some type of myth or noble lie justifying its mission or existence? Please explian your agreement or disagreement.
: I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks-Carrie
Ask yourself these questions:
"Why would anyone sacrifice their life, time or property for the good of the community?"
"Isn't such sacrifice necessary in order to maintain ones society?" e.g. Revolutionary war, Normandy etc.
"Even if one could make a logical case, ie non-mythic, is that how people make decisions or do we rely on images and myth?" examples from WWII the film "Triumph of the Will" and the American film series "Why we Fight"
