i have this projectile motion problem that i've been working on in my calculus based physics cl and im having trouble conceptualizing the problem. okay here goes...
william tell must split the apple atop his son's head from a distance of 25.0 m. when he aims directly at the apple, the arrow is horizontal. At what angle must he aim it to hit the apple if the arrow travels at a speed of 22.5 m/s.
I take that last part to mean that it has initial velocity of 22.5 m/s in the angle it is shot. I know there is a way to figure it out, knowing that the acc. due to gravity is -9.8 m/s^2, i run into trouble figuring out how to start to separate 22.5 m/s into velocities in the x and y directions, and if i can find a velocity in the x direction, i can easily find the time for it to traverse the 25 m, and vice versa, with v in the y direction, i can find the time to travel up and return to the original height, but these need to be from the initial velocity of 22.5 m/s. any help is... well helpful. thank you in advance. -steve
