I like the “individual” wherever one can be found … comradeship and community is something we are all looking for.
I live in modern day Los Angeles where it just seems impossible on a large scale.
LA with its fratras of races, sects, cultures and classes – people gravitate to those of their own kind not to mention those of their own language and even amidst "ones own" there is a good deal of hostility, suspicion and violence. We are barely able to communicate with one another much less be friends and form genuine communities.
My sister dragged me down to a “Costco” in LA the other day in search of cheap gas … there were a lot of dead eyed unhappy Orientals lazily pushing around their carts – it was like a scene from dantes inferno or orwell’s 1984 … except I couldn’t even speak the language.
Heh - well perhaps I am being too pessimistic – but it was dreadful. No sign of "God" "The muses" or "the cosmic song" to be found anywhere. -- the future I suppose !
