Bill Bradley Calls for Affirmative Action for White Athletes
Times Tribune Staff Writer
Wednesday, November 17, 1999
CHAPPAQUA, NY.--Pointing to what he called "obvious physical discrimination", Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley today outlined a new affirmative action proposal aimed at non-African-American athletes.
Speaking to a group of elementary school students in this wealthy, white New York suburb, Bradley told of his own difficulties in pursuing his career as a basketball player. "As a student athlete at Princeton I was able to compete on a level playing field," Bradley said. "But once I entered the NBA it became clear that it would be difficult for me to compete against African-American players who had a historical physical advantage. Had an affirmative action program been in place at that time, who knows how many minutes per game I could have played, and how many more points I could have scored."
"Affirmative action is common sense." Bradley continued." It recognizes that race is indeed a factor in athletics. It recognizes that there are physical barriers to athletic success for many Americans simply because of their race. Athletic affirmative action will produce a better America by reaching out to the broadest possible community of athletic talent in our country. "
Among other things, Bradley's plan would require quotas for all collegiate and professional athletic teams, requiring them to represent a mirror image of the racial breakdown of America. As an example Bradley cited the #1 ranked Florida State football team. "Since non-African-Americans constitute roughly 82% of the population, then the Seminole football team would have to limit it's number of African American players to 12% of the team. Should they fail to do so the University as a whole will lose it's state and federal funding."
"Non-African-Americans do not want special treatment. But they do want the same athletic opportunities African Americans have. They want a chance to succeed, and athletic affirmative action will make that happen."
