I don't know if you will receive this message, but I shall post it all the same. I think you are right, in a way... All Orwell's novels follow the plot of an allegorical 'lost-sheep-found' story; the figure wanders from society, becomes the outsider for a while, but returns to the flock by the end of the piece no-matter how pessimistic their starting point may have been. Therefore: Comstock in 'Aspidistra' wanders through the barren wastes of socialism, only to find the tidy world of the aspidistra is not so awful after all; The Clergyman's Daughter leaves country parochialism for the threatening city, only to return, literally to God's side; In 'Coming up for Air' we see a man wander from modern life into a 'wasteland' where he grew up, only to realise that he cannot escape real life. Etc. etc.
But where does all this leave us? If Orwell's wastelands are more appealing that the path of 'righteousness', is it better to be the sinner than the saint?
