George Orwell's Keep The Aspidistra Flying is an angry novel. Comstock can be seen as something of a predecessor of the Angry Young Men of the 1950s - though Comstock was, if anything, angrier still. Or is he angry at an increasingly debasing culture or many the fact that he doesn't have an Aspidistra and the life it symbolises of a respectable middle cl existence? But he can't coerce Rosemary into bed meaning he is angry because of the ual tension. The fact that he decends into fashionable poverty and not real poverty may mean that he is just proving a point and is willing to fully intergrate himself into society once he has proven this point.
Just some ideas on Keep the Aspidistra as an angry novel, what does everone else think?
