: i just got on to rand, being half way through atlas shrugged, and while i agree with much of her philosophy, there are some problems i would appreciate some feedback on. : as i understand it, the three principle tennets of her philosophy are rationalism, selfishness and capitalism. I understand that not everyone is expected to have the kind of talent seen in hank rearden, and that there is a place even for the lowest janitor or whatever, as long as they provide a service and don't expect more than they deserve in return. What however, of the idiot? The retarded child, the demented elderly person, all the people that are completely dependent, through no fault of their own, on the charity of others. Where do they fit in? : If Hank Rearden were to suddenly become a vegetable, as a result of say a car accident, would dagny drop him like a hot potatoe?
