You should really do some study on the humanist/Renaissance movement, Bruce. You are using the definition of humanism way too broadly.
A humanist is NOT a scholar of the humanities. It was a specific movement towards the capalities of man, physical and rational ones.
Yes, it all started with the revival of the classics, but if you study it a little further (and the book I suggested is a great way to start) you will understand a=that the founders of this movement didn't appreciate the classical cultural for any of the supernatural beliefs, they took mythology as SYMBOLISM, they didn't actually believe in the gods.
If you study the Renaissance art you will notice that they used classical gods and symbols only as allegories to their thoughts. Minerva for fertility, Athenas for wisdom, etc, etc, etc.
Please read up on this subject, the difference between humanities and humanism will become clear to you.
