Rand was the strongest modern humanist! What is objectivism if not a second Renaissance? Like the Italian founders of the Renaissance, Ayn urged people to concentrate on rationality rather than religion, on science, on human virtue and individuality.
No, communism and religion (Christianity included) do not qualify as humanists institutions. Quite the opposite! They focus on the good of the herd, the community instead of the possiblities of the individual minds. Capitalism, as I mentioned earlier, was one of the main forces of the Renaissance and humanist movement because it is the only economic order that reflects the ability of an INDIVIDUAL human being, and how individuals participate with one another by FREE WILL.
The only philosophies which can be ociated with humanism are the ones that view each man with an individual capacity. Humanism was a RATIONAL movement, not a supernatural one. That is why objectivism is the closest thing we have to humanism today.
I think perhaps you confuse the meaning of humanism, Bruce. I suggest you read The Renaissance, The Story of CIvilization by Will Durant. You'll realize that humanism and objectivism are elementary part of the same school of thought.
