As I understand it (and my guess is that Peregrine is better educated than I am in this regard), Humanism was a Rennaissance movement founded, in part at least, by Sir Thomas More, and by the great Dutch Monk, Erasmus. While it is true that this movement studied and rediscovered Greek and Roman thought, and that it believed that the sudy of human creations could be valuable (as opposed to the study only of nature or theology), it is also true that these scholars believed that the works of man were glorious because they reflected God, since man was God's creation.
It is a per peeve of mine that atheists have stolen the word "humanist" from such devout men as Thomas More and Erasmus. Certainly the Renaissance "humanists" did NOT "elevate man to an ideal being". In fact, they were devout Christians, who felt that, despite man's imperfect nature, in his greatest works we could see the face and the influence of God.
