Yes, the sermon is a clever literary device used by Melville...he sets up the religious strongholds he wishes to question, specifically the puritan view of God that ascribed legalistic tendencies to the God of the Bible. He also is seeking to draw our attention to a like awareness in which we see firsthand human struggle which drives our ambition, like Ishmael, and ambition gone mad in Ahab. Great stuff indeed.
