Re: King James Bible & Shakespeare

I may be relating this wrong, but I heard a radio program on public radio a few years back. The guest was a biblical scholar of some sort who asserted that the modern Bible is the result of the Emperor Constantine's Council of Nicea. There, the high ranking officials of the Church collected the more than 50,000 holy texts in use throughout the Christian world, and chose the 54(?) that are contained in the Bible today as the official cannon. The rest were to be burned as apocryphal.

I like this argument because, compared to other world religions, Christianity seems to have a severe lack of holy texts. Most other religions have several thousand, whereas Christianity has only 50 or so (the books of the Bible). Can we reasonably believe that holy men throughout the ages only wrote those 50? That no other religious texts specific to Christianity existed? And, if not, why were those 54 considered the most important, when many of them contradict each other or have ceased to be practical in the modern age (how many Christian women lock themselves away as being unclean during their periods as required by the book of Leviticus?) Why is the Gospel of St. Thomas (made famous by the movie Stigmata) or the Dead Sea Scrolls or the Apocrypha not considereed sacred texts when the messages in them seem to me to be just as valid as those in the Bible?
