: : I have read Heart of Darkness and someone told me that Apocalypse now was loosely based on HOD. I totally see how it is based on it - the general theme of man's all into the darkness when there are no outside controls over one's behaviour. A-NOW received alot of criticism for it's betrayal of the Vietnam war but I think people have missed the point. A-now was not about the vietnam war - it was about man's decent into the darkness. It only proves Conrad's them applies overtime and setting.
: Any thoughts? You hit the nail on the head, yes it is a story from a different era but human nature remains the same. You stated that it was about one mans decent into darkness.....this is a half truth. Kurtz in apocalypse now has no doubt become a loose cannon the US special forces are partley responsible for this too. Kurtz is no fool, he can see through the bs (the absurdity of the viet nam war)....think about what I have said. As far as the Kurtz in HoD the same rule applies, in the belgan congo Kurtz clearly see's the of the land by the Europeans. Who are we to say that the Africans were savages when it was the europeans worked these people until they dropped dead or compensated them for there labor by paying them in copper wire or gl beads. The Kurtz of HoD saw through this to. Please respond to this if you wish...we can take it further. many regards
