Marlow is bored after an extended shore tramp and
bothering his mates. He wishes to return to the open water(in this case a tinny river launch).
Marlow is also drawn to dark places: "someday I will go there...". Kurtz is a reason for Marlow to explore. Marlow is not a company man. The whole ivory business has a sense of lugubrious drollery about it, and Marlow repects none in the employ of the ravenous concern
At the end Marlow becomes Kurtz's confessor and memory guardian, withholding company secrets owned by Kurtz. And for us, along with the gentlemen on the Nellie, Marlow becomes an emmissary ofa different type of light, not given to the Intended.
