: Hi, I need short story criticism on Eveline. : Please send it to me oke..by BBBBB Eveline involves a woman named Eveline who struggles to separate herself from her family in order to follow her love into the arms of her young beau named Frank. The latter work. The mood of the stories are set by the dark somber lighting accompanied by periods of eerie silence that which the main characters experience at times. In Eveline the family theme can be seen in Eveline as she stays and takes over the mother role of the household as a teen when her mother dies because she feels it is her duty and she owed it to her mother. Death seems ever present as well in both works as many of Eveline's friends and family we are told die at some point (i.e. Earnest, her mother, Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque, Tizzie Dunn.) Death also makes an appearance in Araby, as we begin the story we are told the main character lives in a building where an old priest had just died. Religion pervades Joyce's works, in Eveline the family we meet seems to have strong religious ties and we see in the house hanging a likeness of Mary Margaret Alacoque, a French nun. The families in the stories are both poor and money is a very precious commodity in their lives. The same fear is expressed by Eveline in her story where she is walking to the market pressing her purse close to her body to protect it at all times as if she holds her life in her hand. Eveline shows her poverty when she remarks how amazing the seats Frank gets her at the theater because she is use to sitting in the back last row because its all she could afford if that. Eveline sees the organ player who is told to leave so her mother can p away in silence. in Eveline we see the her out on the town with Frank. Blind love is shown in both as Eveline gives up her chance with Frank in order to return to her family out of love
