The boy in 'an encounter' believes all the way through the story that green eyes are adventureoues. For example when he stops at the boats to see if the sailors have green eyes. Because they have experienced the world and are adventurous. He then find that they have blue and grey eyes, not green as he believed. So then when he is confronted with this strange man, he sees that he has green eyes, not what he had expected. This is when reality conflicts with his ideal construct of what it is to be adventurous. He see's this sick man with green eyes and at that moment he realizes that all he believed was a lie. he experiences an epiphany here, and his first instinct is to get away from the man.
